A Resolution Worth Sticking To: Crisis Vigilance in the New Year

January 2, 2025

With the holidays in the rearview mirror, many of us now turn to making personal resolutions for the new year. Whether it’s training for a Tough Mudder, getting more sleep (hello, melatonin), saving more money for your dream retirement beach house, or remembering to call your elderly aunt at a more regular cadence, focusing on your intentions for the new year is a worthy exercise. Guess what else is? Making resolutions for 2025 for your business – starting with preparing for the unexpected.

We saw a lot of businesses make headlines for all the wrong reasons this past year. Our experience tells us that they are still cleaning up from those incidents. Big or small, no business is immune from the threat of a crisis … though many can be avoided (see here and here for more than enough proof of that). Some demonstrated that they were neither properly prepared for a crisis (example here) nor knew how to best manage it. Or both.

Let these businesses and their unfortunate situations serve as cautionary tales as you look at your company’s 2025 goals and plans. And when you make a must-do list for the wellbeing of your business this year, be sure that crisis training is a resolution you and your fellow leaders stick to.

Here are a few thought starters you can discuss at your next team meeting to help your leaders and team see whether your business is ready to handle a crisis:

Discussion Questions:

  1. What do you plan to do to prepare for crisis in 2025?
  2. Have you established your core crisis team?
  3. Do you have crisis training in your budget?
  4. Is your business truly RiskReady? (Find out here)
