Be on the Lookout for Crisis Pretenders

February 27, 2026

Maria Stagliano had the backbone to say what I’ve been thinking when she wrote this column in O’Dwyer’s. I have found it fascinating to see how many different people in communications say they do crisis management. You don’t hear me say I do fashion PR or CSR. This is why I have a vast network that I regularly refer work to.

It’s been a privilege to be a judge for the PR Week’s Purpose Awards because I’m amazed at the creativity that comes from this industry in an effort to tell a story. But that is never my job. My job is to do everything I can to keep people out of the news.

I dabble in public affairs (you don’t spend 15 years on campaigns and two hills without being able to do this) but I stay in my lane because I’m an expert in my lane.

I can also talk ad nauseum about the difference between crisis communications and crisis management. Maria does a better job of talking crisis PR here, and I invite you to check it out. I’ll tackle the difference between crisis comms and crisis management another day.
